Carl Honore’s book is a revelation and a powerful commentary on our modern society and value paradigm. When our modern world dictates that faster is better – Slow reveals a growing movement to understand that time is a modern construct that undermines quality and meaning – in every aspect of our lives.
I don’t know about you but when I get to Autumn I inevitably find that it isn’t only the weather that starts to get gray! It is of course a well known fact that our seratonin levels drop at this time of year, which can affect our moods and emotions, causing us to become depressed and demotivated.
I have discovered this year that there is a way of handling this seasonal change without resorting to extended trips to the Mediterranean or safari’s in the Kruger! This year I made a point of embracing the changes in the seasons and enjoying the events and changes that make them unique and special.
As Autumn came upon us we badgered the kids to go for long walks together in the afternoon in the woods, appreciating the changes in the trees and nature as they happened. I roped the boys into sweeping up the leaves in the garden ( normally we would have just left it!) and we started lighting log fires and toasting crumpets on a Saturday afternoon when the drizzle and rain ruined any other plans we had made!
We cooked food that related to the season – vegetables and fruit that were in season, hot soups, roasts and apple crumble!
All this change I can honestly say this has made Autumn a pleasure this year! and I haven’t really felt depressed at all. Of course the challenge now is to embrace the winter – without the prospect of snow – this could be a little harder!
